History

Located just one mile west of the Rose Bowl, Annandale Golf Club is one of the older private golf courses in Southern California. It was organized in 1894 and incorporated in 1906 and in 2006 the club celebrated its centennial year of operation. The name "Annandale" was selected by one of its founders, Alexander Robert Campbell-Johnson, because the area reminded him of his ancestral home in Annandale, Scotland. The original golf course and clubhouse was moved north of Colorado Boulevard in 1917. In the early 1970's four golf holes was redesigned for the construction of the 134 freeway. Today, the golf course plays 6,400 yards from the back tees on 95 acres of land.

Assistant Superintendent

As an Assistant Superintendent I worked closely with the Superintendent Ed Kutt, CGCS on all facets of golf course maintenance. Our main goal is to provide the best possible playing conditions for the membership everyday. This is possible due to our maintenance staff. Many of the staff members have been with Annandale for over 30+ years and are well educated on all areas of the golf course. This makes things easier when doing projects or normal maintenance. In addition to the golf course we are responsible for the Clubhouse grounds and adjacent areas where an additional crew is in place.

The position of Assistant at Annandale was "hands on". I worked with the crew to finish projects when needed or provide additional resources if required. In addition to this working management position I was also responsible for the following areas:

---

-#3 Fairway .
#9 Green

During my time at Annandale the golf course has gone through normal maintenance and a tee laser leveling project. At certain times of the year the crew does encounter weather related challenges such as high rainfall amounts during the winter which will erode cart paths, wash out sand traps and cause clean up of debris on fairways. This was the situation in the winter of 2005 where the golf course received over 40" of rain in a 10 week period. Average yearly rainfall for Pasadena is 20". Several times during this period the crew cleaned up washed out DG cart path material covered fairways, added new sand to washed out sand traps and removed fallen trees.

In addition to maintaining the course through adverse weather conditions of rain and the 100+ degree days of the summer the staff overseeds the entire golf course in early fall after our last major tournament. The bermuda based course is overseeded to ryegrass at 350 pounds/Acre. From start to finish the process takes roughly two weeks to complete.

My experiences at Annandale have been most educational and to have the chance to work at such a well respected golf course is an honor. I did look forward to each day that I spend at the golf course and to learn something more then the day before.
